A Poem on the Work of Mosaic (June 2016)

POEM
A Report of the Work of Mosaic
at its Visioning Retreat 2016

Together in the Mosaic community, in the last year we discovered
…that Clegg and Epworth had what it takes to merge effectively
…our surprise at how successful we were at merger; how much the missions were similar, how smoothly our integration was accomplished
…that discussion of who we came from is almost never heard

We discovered…
…we, the previously unchurched, discovered our surprise at how loving, warm, comforting it is at Mosaic
…for some who were doubtful, our surprise that we are still here;
that we have discovered that this is our family
…and imagine our surprise that we have babies!

Together in the Mosaic community, we discovered…
…how fun it is to be together
…the renewing of ministry, because we’re together
…the breadth of the commitment
…multiple gifts in this congregation.

We discovered…
…that though lots of churches say they want to try being church in new ways, Mosaic means it
…that we have the courage we need
…that blending is amazing
…that we haven’t lost our drive for community involvement
…that love continues to bond us

Together in the Mosaic community, we have discovered…
…a mission field
…that we enjoy differences in worship

We have discovered…
…Scott’s openness
our cohesiveness
spiritual food
hospitality
balance
a willingness to participate.

Together in the Mosaic community, we have discovered…
a number of ministries are supported
a number of retired pastors choose to be here
a number of people healing from other religion’s spiritual damage
the dedication of the staff
a global perspective
that we are cohesive
creative
blended
blessed
spirit-filled
soul-fed.

Together, we have discovered…
that an organizational structure is more centrally focused than first thought
…that there’s not a lot of church presence in the inner city
…that traffic is an issue

We have discovered…
adaptability
dynamism
energy
a sense of not moving fast enough.

We have discovered…
how much Mosaic is like family
that we are like-minded
the music/the people are inclusive, not exclusive
That a variety in worship style is interesting.

We have discovered
…The size of the choir
…The role of music in worship
…An appreciation of worshippers for the music
…Quality in music

We discovered
…caring in worship.

Together, in Mosaic this year, we have discovered…
that Mosaic actually does social justice rather than just talk about it.
The percentage of people who care
Collegiality
Abundance of love
Dance!

We have discovered…
that Mosaic embraces and expresses the tradition of the church in new, creative ways
that we walk the walk, we don’t just talk

We have discovered…
Open, loving people
Different faces, the same feeling of community

We have discovered…
…a healing home
…that inclusiveness is the seed.

{PART TWO}

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled
….when we are the body of Christ/Love
…when the body is healthy

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled…
…when all are welcome
…when we are not a location
…when we have a home-base
…when we have a Mosaic window
…when we have satellites
…being where people are.

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled…
…planting seeds
…in compassionate ministries
…doing ministries that seek justice
...by more ministries
…in seamless positive collaboration
…when we learn how to relate to people who may have been toxic to us.

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled…
…with good worship in a variety of styles that work together
…not worship style but speaking truth and meaningfulness.

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled…
by the elements of home: United Methodist roots, sermons, music, rhythm of music
with a building that serves worship, welcomes, allows for studies, and storage

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled…
…by more deeply stepping out in faith
…by serving people.

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled…
…Thinking about: Where are we church? Everywhere.
…realizing building is home and home is important.
…In more urban locations; millennials are moving closer to downtown

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled
Realizing Mosaic is not a location
Realizing facilities follow mission
Realizing our unique role in the conference
Providing a safe place for youth
In multiple locations throughout Oklahoma City

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled…
Realizing the Church focus is not limited by the building
Realizing mission defines us:
Human sexuality, inclusion, social issues, seminars, speakers
Creating a setting/environment that encourages people to talk to each other
Creating a place to gather from which we can go out.

Mosaic’s mission and passion are best fulfilled…
In diversity.

{PART THREE}

Moving forward in our vision for the good work of Mosaic, we boldly consider
…Create less of a clubhouse, more of a web
…facilitate gathering people at many points and times
…create satellite locations
…grow a youth group, involve kids more—with mission trips, weekly classes, and face-to-face
…coordinate a program for homeless kids
…create multiple clinics for physical and mental needs
…create a bar church
…have a presence south of the river
…have a presence in mid-town, uptown
…respond to the fact that millennials are moving back to the inner city
…help establish new priorities in this state and city and especially in the United Methodist Church
…respond to issues in education…adopt a school and help take care of that school

Moving forward in our vision for the good work of Mosaic, we boldly consider…
…maintain a home-base
…recognize that we need home and then we serve
…provide at Mosaic North, or MoNo, a food security site, including community garden

We boldly consider…
…broadcast services online
…televise sermons
…hire more staff to facilitate more local ministries and to connect with other groups doing ministry to those in need
Expand our property in a SIMPLE way
…Recognize that re-think church; re-church feels like fertile ground for doing church in new ways
…Break the ruts and molds and moldiness
…Build a simple, minimalist, green sanctuary AND do satellite ministry

Moving forward in our vision for the good work of Mosaic, we boldly consider…
…Celebrate gay weddings
…Work for voter registration
…fund non-profits
…Let go of building
…Maintain the energy to be a church on the move
…Maintain a sense of renewal/ passion and energy
…Create space for the children
…Be a happening place, with music, giveaways, coffee shop
…Create a storefront location

Moving forward in our vision for the good work of Mosaic, we boldly consider…
At OCU—renovate, expand, partner
At Hefner—ministries of food security, eco-spirituality, OIM Church, community
South of the river—Hispanic ministry

Moving forward in our vision for the good work of Mosaic, we boldly consider…
…be a church where everyone is just folks
…create a spider-web of compassionate, just, inclusive, presence.
